The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team won a pair of 5-3 decisions over Lewis on Friday afternoon at the UIS Baseball Field. The Prairie Stars moved their winning streak to 10 games with the victories.
Â
The story of the game was UIS's relief pitching which pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed no runs, three hits, and two walks.
Ian Delleman earned the save in game one, and
Cameron Zunkel was the winner of the second game.
Â
In the opener, Lewis jumped out to a 3-0 after 1 ½ innings. A pair of two-run homers flipped the leaderboard though.
Austin Alderman hit the first one in the second inning, followed by
Zion Pettigrew in the third.
Â
Quinn Gudaitis fought through a slow start and went 4 2/3 innings, and he gave up just four hits and seven strikeouts.
Brendan Anderson got the final out in the fifth, and then Delleman completed the final two frames.
Â
Offensively,
Brant Vanaman had a team-high two hits and walked once. Pettigrew had his homer, and also reached base with two walks.
Â
Game two was nearly a repeat with Lewis jumping out to a 3-0 lead, this time holding that lead after the top of the fourth. A two-out rally in the bottom of that frame put the Prairie Stars ahead for good.
Bobby Barnard started it with a walk, and the Prairie Stars benefitted from an error on the next batter.
Brandon Bannon singled home the first run, and two straight walks and a wild pitch tied the game. Alderman then hit a two-run double to put UIS ahead for good.
Â
Zunkel entered the game in the top of the fourth and got UIS out of a third and second jam. He then threw the final three innings, allowing just two hits.
Â
Alderman had two of the team's four hits in the second game. Vanaman and Barnard each reached base three times, all of them as part of 12 walks that the Prairie Stars drew.
Â
UIS improves to 28-6 overall and 8-3 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars moved into first place in the GLVC Blue Division after a pair of losses by Quincy. UIS will go for the series sweep over Lewis on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
