The University of Illinois Springfield men's golf team heads to the GLVC Championships this week. The event will take place Friday through Sunday at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
 
The 13-team field will play 54 holes on Friday and Saturday. The top four teams will then advance to match play on Sunday to determine the conference team champion.
 
Under first-year head coach Michael Leotta, the Prairie Stars have been improving throughout the year. UIS had a 315.0 fall average, and lowered that to 312.3 in the spring. UIS has a 302.3 average over the last two competitions that it competed in.
 
UIS will be led by a balanced lineup at the GLVC Championships. The five golfers are within 2.05 strokes of each other, and all five have led the team in at least one tournament this year. Each of the five have also scored at least one round of 75 or better on the year.
 
The team's top golfer for the season is currently Brady Wilson. Wilson has a 78.00 scoring average. He has five rounds of 75 or better, and his top overall finish was 16th at the Quincy Invitational. Also averaging below 79 is Aryaman Mohan. Mohan has a 78.58 average for the year, and had one top-20 finish.
 
Spencer Jury is the only member of the team who has experience competing at the GLVC Championships after he finished 51st last year. This season, he is averaging 79.10 shots per round, including a 74.0 average over the last two weeks. Jury was runner-up at the Quincy Invitational on Monday and Tuesday this week.
 
Hagen Sanchez and Tom Bumann round up the lineup. Sanchez is averaging 79.93, including a 70 two weeks ago at the Dan Salisbury Memorial.  Bumann is averaging an 80.05, and had his best career tournament at Quincy with a two-round score of 152.
 
UIS finished eighth at last year's conference championship meet, and was within 11 shots of the fifth-place finisher. The Prairie Stars have come in eighth or better in six out of the last seven GLVC events.
