The University of Illinois Springfield men's tennis team had several opportunities for the winning point on Sunday against Lewis, but ended up one point shy in a 4-3 loss to the Flyers.
Â
Lewis won both doubles matches that were completed, which proved to be the difference in the match. The Flyers had a narrow 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles, especially important since UIS was ahead in the No. 3 contest.
Â
In singles, UIS tied the match by winning two of the first three singles contests.
Menno Servaes won the No. 1 match in straight sets, and
Tomas Martinez won No. 2 in a narrow 7-5 tiebreaker in the third set.
Â
Lewis remained in the lead in a three-set win at No. 4 singles, with the deciding third set being a 6-4 margin.
Matthew Lapsley had a dominating win at No. 6, losing just two points. That meant that the No. 5 flight would decide the match, and Lewis won 6-4 in the third set.
Â
UIS falls to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars are back at it next Friday at Southern Indiana.
