The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader at Quincy. The Prairie Stars dropped game one by an 11-6 score, but bounced back for an 8-3 win in the second game.
Â
In the first contest, UIS led 3-0 early after a three-run homer by
Austin Alderman. The Hawks quickly responded though with six runs in the bottom of the inning, and they never trailed again.
Â
Asher Bradd finished with two hits and two runs, and Kal Younquist had two hits and three RBI.
Â
In the second game, the offense got hot late and the relief pitching made some clutch pitches to help the Prairie Stars get the split.
Â
UIS trailed 2-1 in the fourth and Quincy was looking for more when it loaded the bases with two outs.
Ian Delleman came in and got a pop out to get out of the jam.
Â
The next batter of the game, UIS's
Zion Pettigrew, then homered to tie the game. UIS would add one more in the fifth for a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Hawks had runners on the corner with one out, when
Matt Blaney entered and induced a double play ball.
Â
The Prairie Stars offense then sealed the game with five runs over the final two innings.
Nick Mayerhofer had the biggest hit with a two-run single in the seventh that put UIS up three runs.
Â
Pettigrew finished the second game three-for-three with two walks, two RBI, and one run. Bradd had two more hits and two runs, and Youngquist and Mayerhofer each finished with two RBI.
Â
The 13th-ranked Prairie Stars and Quincy will conclude their four-game series on Sunday.
