The 13th-ranked University of Illinois Springfield baseball team lost a home run derby to Quincy on Friday afternoon in the GLVC opener for both teams. The Hawks won by a score of 7-5.

Nine of the 12 runs were scored on home runs in the game. Quincy hit five of those home runs for six of its seven runs, while UIS connected for three solo home runs.

The Prairie Stars entered the ninth down 7-3, and loaded the bases with just one out. A single and groundout scored two for UIS, but the tying run was stranded on second when the final out was recorded.

UIS's homers came from Brand Vanaman,
Brayden Gorecki, and
Hunter Phelps.
Zion Pettigrew and
Bobby Barnard each had three hits.
Brendan Anderson was the most effective pitcher, throwing 3 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed two hits and no runs, and struck out three.

UIS saw its 13-game winning streak come to an end, and it is now 17-4 on the season. The Prairie Stars and Hawks will play two tomorrow in the middle games of the four-game set.
