The University of Illinois Springfield softball team got great pitching on Sunday in its GLVC opening doubleheader, but it couldn't generate enough offense for a victory. The Prairie Stars fell to Lindenwood by scores of 2-1 and 1-0.
Â
The duo of
Payton Long and
Reagan Miles threw a combined 14 1/3 innings and allowed just 12 hits, four walks. The pair struck out eight batters, and Lindenwood hit just .218 on the day.
Â
In the first game, Long did not allow an earned run for the first eight innings of the game. UIS took a 1-0 lead in the fifth after
Kayana Diederich led off the inning with a double. She would score two batters later on a single by
Grace Harris. The Lions answered though in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run.
Â
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the ninth when Lindenwood had a walk-off win with back-to-back doubles.
Â
Long allowed just five hits and one walk, and she struck out seven batters.
Â
In the second contest, the only run came in the third when Lindenwood had a two-out triple to score a runner. UIS had six hits, but was just three-of-14 with runners on base. Miles scattered seven hits, and stranded 10 runners.
Â
UIS falls to 14-6 on the season. The Prairie Stars return to action on Monday when they host Missouri-St. Louis at 3 p.m.
