Baseball Scores Eight Unanswered Runs In Comeback Win

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team scored eight unanswered runs for a come-from-behind victory over Northwest Missouri on Sunday in Joplin, Mo. The Prairie Stars defeated the Bearcats by a 9-7 margin in 11 innings.

UIS fell behind 7-1 after two innings, but the team's relievers did not allow a run for the final nine innings. Six pitchers allowed just four hits and two walks, and struck out 13 in those nine innings. Eddie Wilkins and Brendan Anderson each went two innings of scoreless all, and Ian Delleman, Luke Fitton, Matt Blaney, and Mason Coon pitched the remaining innings.

The Prairie Stars tied the game with four runs in the seventh. The tying hit was a three-run homer by Kal Youngquist.

In extra innings, catcher Bobby Barnard made two big plays to give UIS the victory. In the bottom of the tenth, Northwest Missouri hit a one-out double to get the winning run in scoring position. Mason Coon came in relief and on the next batter, Barnard threw the runner out trying to steal third.

In the top of the 11th, UIS got two on to start the inning, but Northwest Missouri struck out the next two batters. Barnard hit a two-out, two-run triple which proved to be the winning run. Coon nailed down the final three outs for his first win of the year.

Barnard and Youngquist both had three hits and multiple RBI. Zion Pettigrew reached base four times, had two hits, one homer, two RBI, and three runs. Asher Bradd and Brandon Bannon each had two runs. Johnny Colombo finished the game with two hits.

UIS, which is now 4-2 on the year, ends play at the MIAA/GLVC Crossover on Monday against Missouri Southern.
