For the second straight game, the University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer game came down to an overtime penalty kick. On Sunday in St. Charles, Mo., the Prairie Stars were on the wrong end of the kick as their four-game winning streak was snapped in a 2-1 setback against Lindenwood.
Â
The two teams were in overtime thanks to some late magic once again by UIS. The Prairie Stars had been trailing 1-0 since the 31st minute until they were rewarded a free kick with less than seven minutes remaining in the game.
Abby Dellamorte put the kick on goal and caused the Lindenwood goalie to make a save. The Prairie Stars got to the rebound first and
Sierra Cenek scored to tie the game at one.
Â
UIS had several chances early in overtime, including a shot on goal in the 93rd minute by
Madison Grandys. Late the first overtime period though, the Prairie Stars committed a foul in the box, and the Lions converted the penalty kick for the win.
Â
The balanced contest saw UIS take 12 shots and six shots on goal, while Lindenwood had 11 shots and also had six shots on goal. Both teams committed 16 fouls, and the Lions had two more corner kicks.
Â
Allison Mirimanian made four saves in the game.
Claire Sokol,
Angela Dagnino, and
Maggie Joos all played 99 minutes in the field.
Â
UIS falls to 4-1-1 on the season, and 2-1-0 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars are in action again on Friday night at Southern Indiana.
