The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team secured its best start in program history on Friday night at Lee Field in Springfield, Ill. The Prairie Stars picked up a 2-1 overtime victory over Missouri-St. Louis.
The turning point in the game came in the 73rd minute when Missouri-St. Louis, which already led 1-0, had a breakaway opportunity. UIS goalie
Allison Mirimanian made a save on the first shot, but the rebound went right back to the Tritons. Mirimanian turned away the second shot though as well, changing the momentum of the game.
UIS finally broke through in the 80th minute when the Prairie Stars put a free kick into the box, and
Sierra Cenek scored in the ensuing scramble.
Abby Dellamorte was credited with the assist on the score.
In overtime in the 94th minute, UIS drew a foul in the box and was awarded a penalty kick.
Allison Hackett buried the kick in the right corner for the game-winning goal.
UIS finished the game with a 13-10 edge in shot, but Missouri-St. Louis had a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Mirimanian made five saves and earned the victory in goal.
UIS is now 4-0-1 on the season, the first time that it is unbeaten after five games. The Prairie Stars will look to continue their streak on Sunday with a noon game at Lindenwood.
