Track and Field Has Top Distance Runners At Dick Cochran Classic

The University of Illinois Springfield track and field program won three events over the weekend at the Dick Cochran Classic in St. Charles, Mo. The Prairie Stars swept the 5,000m and also won the women's 10,000m as the team was the top distance program at the competition.
 
In Friday's 10,000m, Alexa Thomsen won the women's race with a time of 40:08.38. She won her race by nearly 12 seconds. In the men's 10,000m, UIS had five of the top eight runners, including Ryan Stark in second with a time of 32:04.03, and Trevor Dunkel in third with a mark of 32:08.37.
 
In Saturday's 5,000m, Savannah Brannan won her competition in a time of 17:43, over a minute ahead of the runner-up. Cortland Ross also had a convincing win, finishing first in a time of 14:34.15. UIS again had five of the top-eight, including Wyatt McIntyre finishing fifth.
 
In other races, Libby Price took the bronze in the 800m. She had a time of 2:22.32, four seconds ahead of teammate Breanna Chandler who came in fifth. Cayden Kirkham finished fourth in the men's 800m with a time of 1:58.49.
 
In the 3,000m steeplechase, Gloria Esarco and Jake Schwartz both finished second in their respective races. Esarco had a time of 11:23.07, and Schwartz's mark was 10:13.81.
 
UIS ends its regular season next week at the Grand Valley State University meet.
