Softball's Offense Leads To Two Wins Over William Jewell

The University of Illinois Springfield softball team collected 18 runs and 23 hits on Sunday afternoon at LOLJOS. The hot offense helped the squad extend its home winning streak to six with 9-8 and 9-2 victories over William Jewell.

The opening game saw the Cardinals take their first lead in the top of the sixth with a four-run inning. UIS responded in the bottom half by getting its first two runners on. Calla Wickenhauser then singled down the third-base line to score both, and give UIS its one-run victory.

Wickenhauser had three hits in the game and four RBI. Carolyn Franke hit a homer and drove in two. Lindsay LaDere had two hits, and she and Kayana Diederich both scored twice. Addison Bryant earned the win in relief, and Diederich, who started the game, reentered on the mound in the seventh and collected the save.

In game two, UIS scored one or two runs every inning, and Evey Evans pitched a great game for the Prairie Stars. Evans came in relief and threw the final six innings. She allowed just five hits and one run. Thirteen of her 18 outs were groundouts.

Offensively, Danielle Dennis had three hits, and Wickenhauser, Carly Chovanec, Ramsey Armstrong, and Diederich all had two hits. Carolyn Franke drove in two, and Wickenhauser and Chovanec each had two runs.

UIS is now 13-21 overall and 8-10 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars hit the road next week for doubleheaders at Rockhurst and Southwest Baptist.
