Softball Extends Home Winning Streak With Sweep Over Truman State

The University of Illinois Springfield softball team captured a doubleheader sweep over Truman State on Saturday afternoon at LOLJOS. The Prairie Stars needed a late comeback in a 3-2 game one win, and won the second game by a 9-0 margin.

UIS trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the first contest, before taking the lead for good in its final at-bat. Danielle Dennis and Carly Chovanec opened the sixth with singles, and both advanced on a fly out to right. Ramsey Armstrong drove in Dennis with a groundout to short, and a two-out single by Kayana Diederich plated the winning run.

Diederich threw the first five innings and allowed just two runs and six hits. Reagan Miles earned the win after pitching the final two frames and giving up just one hit. Chovanec finished the game with two hits, one run, and one RBI.

UIS had two big innings in its five-inning victory in game two. The Prairie Stars scored five times in the first, and added four more in the fourth.

Diederich provided the big blow offensively with a three-run homer in the first. Chovanec and Armstrong both had two hits, including one extra-base hit apiece. Chovanec drove in four runners, and Armstrong drove in two. Ashley Klinzing, Chovanec, and Carolyn Franke all scored twice. Addison Bryant earned the win on the mound, allowing just one hit in 4 1/3 innings.

UIS improves to 11-21 overall and 6-10 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars are in action again at home on Sunday afternoon against William Jewell.
