Softball Loses Two Defensive Battles At Quincy

The University of Illinois softball team was swept on Tuesday afternoon in a pair of defensive battles against Quincy. The Prairie Stars lost game one by a 4-2 score, and dropped the second game in overtime by a 2-1 margin.

The difference in game one was a three-run second inning by Quincy. The Hawks started the inning with two walks and two singles, which scored one run. Two groundouts plated two more runs and gave Quincy a 3-1 lead which would hold up the rest of the game.

A pair of extra-base hits led to UIS's runs. Calla Wickenhauser led off the game with a double, and she scored two batters later on a single by Danielle Dennis. In the sixth, Dennis hit a solo homer for the final run of the game.

Addison Bryant pitched the final five innings for the Prairie Stars. She gave up five hits and two runs, and she struck out three. Dennis finished the game with three hits.

In game two, UIS got a great start from Kayana Diederich. She threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed just one run and five hits. She took a lead into the bottom of the sixth thanks to Dennis who hit her second homer of the game in the fourth inning. In the sixth though, a two-out single by the Hawks tied the game.

After a scoreless seventh, the two teams went into extra innings. UIS did not get a base runner in its half. In the bottom half, Quincy opened the inning with a double. With one out, an error allowed that runner to score the game-winning run.

Dennis had two of the team's four hits in the second game. Besides the homer, she also doubled in the sixth.

UIS falls to 9-21 overall and 4-10 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars return home this Saturday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Truman State.
