The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team used a strong defensive effort to pick up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis. The Prairie Stars defeated Missouri-St. Louis by a 1-0 margin.
Â
UIS struck early in the game in the second minute of the contest.
Ally Lassetter received a pass from
Amanda Meyer, and buried it in the top left of the goal.
Â
That early goal allowed the Prairie Stars' defense to take over the game. Missouri-St. Louis was able to attempt just two shots in the game, and neither were on target. In the 23rd minute, the Tritons had their first shot of the game blocked. Missouri-St. Louis took another shot early in the second half which went wide. UIS did not allow another shot after that for the final 38:31 of the game.
Â
Amanda Finnell earned the shutout in goal. Lassetter finished the game with two shots, and one shot on goal, and
Allison Hackett also had a pair of shots. The defense was led by
Claire Sokol,
Meghan Vlcek, and
Maggie Joos, who all played 90 minutes.
Â
UIS is now 1-1-0 on the season. The Prairie Stars are in action again on Friday at home against McKendree.
