Men's Soccer Defeats Maryville In Overtime In NCAA Tournament Second-Round Action

Darian Turner scored twice on Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Ill. to give the University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team a victory in its first-ever NCAA Tournament contest. The Prairie Stars defeated Maryville in overtime by a 2-1 margin.

Turner scored two goals in his first 45 games at UIS, but matched that total with two of the biggest goals in the program's NCAA era. His first goal tied the game in the 64th minute, and his second goal in the 94th minute set off a big celebration at Kiwanis Stadium for the home team.

UIS dominated the first half, but did not capitalize as neither team scored in the period. The Prairie Stars outshot Maryville 9-5, and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Early in the second half, Maryville took a 1-0 lead. UIS's defense had trouble clearing the ball, leading to a shot on a goal. Pijus Petkevicius made the save, but the rebound went straight to Maryville who put the second shot into the net.

UIS answered in the 64th minute. The Prairie Stars put a pass into the box to Lars Brinkman. Brinkman tapped it to Turner just outside the box, and Turner buried a shot in the top-left corner of the game.

One of the biggest moments of the game came just minutes later when Maryville had two shots in a two-second span. The first hit off the right post, and the second bounced off the crossbar. Both teams had just one shot on goal in regulation after that, and Maryville and UIS went into overtime for the second time in nine days.

One of the substitutions that UIS made to start overtime was inserting Turner back into the game. In the 94th minute, Maryville sent a pass into the box. Two straight headers by the Prairie Stars sent the ball to midfield, where Brinkman flicked it ahead. Turner outran the Maryville defense and collected the ball just outside the box. He then lobbed a shot over the goalkeeper and into the goal.

UIS finished the game with a 15-11 advantage in shots, including 10-5 on shots on goal. Maryville had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Petkevicius returned for the Prairie Stars in goal and he made four saves in the victory. Turner and Brinkman both took three shots on goal, and Rory Carlson had four total shots. Terence Bynoe and Marvin Zott played all 94 minutes in the field.

UIS improves to 13-5-2 on the season, matching the most wins for the program since the 2003 season. The Prairie Stars will face Indianapolis in the third round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. That game will be a rematch of last week's GLVC Tournament Championship match.
