The University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team won its 20th straight home opener in record-breaking style. The Prairie Stars allowed their fewest points in a game during their NCAA era with a 68-39 victory over Eureka.
Â
UIS went into the game placing a heavy emphasis on defense after starting the season with two losses. The Prairie Stars held the Red Devils to just 24.5 percent shooting from the field for the game, including 12.5 percent from behind the three-point arc. UIS also forced 16 turnovers in the game, including nine in the first half.
Â
The defense was especially dominate in a 10-minute stretch in the first half when the Prairie Stars did not allow a single field goal. UIS went on a 15-1 run during that stretch to open up a 21-5 lead, and it never led by fewer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Â
Offensively, UIS struggled from outside the three-point line, but shot 62 percent inside the line, including scoring 68 points in the paint. The Prairie Stars also won the rebounding battle 50-30, and had 30 second-chance points.
Â
James Kelley had a double-double in his first game at TRAC. He was nine-of-13 shooting and finished with 22 points. He also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Jack Weber was seven-of-eight from the field and had 13 points. He also led the team with two blocks and two steals.
Chase Robinson finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Â
UIS moves to 1-2 on the season. The Prairie Stars are back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday at the UIndy Thanksgiving Classic.
