Men's Soccer Heads To First GLVC Tournament Semifinals On Friday

The University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team has advanced to the GLVC Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history. The Prairie Stars will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. this weekend where the final two rounds of the championship event will be played.
 
UIS, the number two seed in the tournament, will face the third-seed, Maryville, in Friday's first semifinal contest. That match will kickoff at 5 p.m. (eastern).
 
UIS advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 win over Missouri-St. Louis in a GLVC Tournament first-round game. Lars Brinkman scored twice in the second half, and Anree Bogart earned a shutout in his first collegiate start in goal. Rory Carlson, Browel Some, and Anton Aduwa-Emovon all recorded assists in the contest.
 
UIS is having its best season since moving to the NCAA level. The Prairie Stars are 12-4-1 on the season, including a 7-1-1 record over their last nine games. UIS appears headed to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Prairie Stars were ranked fourth in the latest NCAA regional poll, and could be in line for hosting the early rounds at Kiwanis Stadium.
 
With his two goals on Sunday, Brinkman now leads UIS with six on the season. Some has a team-high five assists and 13 points. Conal Gallagher has scored five times and has one assist, and is the team's third player with double-digit points.
 
UIS had one player named to one of the all-GLVC teams last week. Pijus Petkevicius was a second-team selection as a goalkeeper. He has a 0.99 GAA on the season, and a .742 save percentage. He went 11-4-1 in goal, with four complete shutouts and played the majority of the game in the fifth shutout.

Maryville will enter the GLVC Tournament semifinal game ranked 12th in NCAA Division II. The Saints are 13-3-2 overall, including 9-1-1 in their last 11 contests.
 
Maryville advanced after tying McKendree in a first-round game by a 1-1 score. The Saints scored in the 7th minute, but allowed a game-tying goal in the 60th minute. In penalty kicks, Maryville advanced by a 10-9 margin.
 
The Saints are currently eighth in the GLVC with 1.50 goals per game, and they are second defensively with a 0.81 GAA.
 
Mirza Hasecic leads the team with seven goals, and Ricardo Andrade has a team-high eight assists. Nick Hemann is second in the GLVC with a 0.75 GAA, and fifth with a .773 save percentage.
 
Earlier this season in Springfield, Ill., the Prairie Stars defeated Maryville by a 1-0 score. Conal Gallagher scored off a free kick in the 26th minute, and that ended up being the only goal. UIS's defense allowed just three shots on goal, including one in the final 45 minutes.
 
UIS leads the all-time series by a 9-5-2 margin. The Prairie Stars have won two straight, and five out of the last seven.

The winner of the UIS/Maryville contest will take on the winner of the Indianapolis/Drury game on Sunday for the GLVC Tournament Championship. That game will take place at 2:30 p.m. (eastern).
 
Indianapolis is ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II this week. The Greyhounds are 13-1-2 on the season, with their lone loss coming to Maryville in the regular season finale. Indianapolis advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Lindenwood.
 
UIS and Indianapolis did not play in the regular season after their scheduled game was not played due to the weather. Indianapolis leads the all-time series by an 11-1-1 mark, but UIS has a win and tie in their last four meetings.
 
Drury is currently 8-6-4 on the year. It upset Lewis by a 1-0 score in the GLVC first round after it scored the game's only goal in the 108th minute.
 
UIS defeated Drury by a 1-0 margin in the final game of the regular season. Anton Aduwa-Emovon scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute. Drury leads the all-time series by a 6-4-3 margin, but UIS is 4-0-2 since 2015.
