The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team used some late game magic to win its sixth game of the season. The Prairie Stars defeated Quincy by a 2-1 score at Kiwanis Stadium.
Â
Most of the night belonged to Quincy, especially in the first half. The Hawks had an 8-2 shot advantage in the period, including the only shots on goal. Three of those came in the same sequence, and led to a Quincy goal in the 15th minute.
Â
Play evened out in the second half, but UIS missed several chances to score the equalizer until late in the half. With just 3:29 remaining in the game, a Prairie Star player was fouled in the box.
Allison Hackett scored the penalty kick, and the two teams went into overtime.
Â
Late in the first overtime period, another Quincy foul gave UIS a free kick on the Quincy side of the field.
Lauren Griffin sent the kick into the penalty box and a loose ball occurred.
Sierra Cenek was in the right spot and scored the game-winner.
Â
UIS ended up trailing on shots by just a 17-16 margin, and both teams had six shots on goal.
Allison Mirimanian had five saves and earned the victory in goal. Cenek finished with a team-high four shots, and
Madison Grandys had two shots on goal.
Â
UIS improves to 6-3-1 overall and 4-3-0 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars are now off until next Friday when they travel to William Jewell.
