The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team overcame three deficits in its GLVC opener against Southern Indiana on Saturday, but it couldn't overcome a fourth one. The Prairie Stars lost at home to the Screaming Eagles by a 16-11 margin.
Â
UIS trailed 3-0, 7-3, and 9-7 in the contest, but came back to tie the game or take the lead after each of those scores. In the sixth inning, the Prairie Stars had a two-out rally, and took a 10-9 lead after
Chris Monroe hit a three-run homer to center field.
Â
The lead was short lived though as Southern Indiana came right back with a seven-run frame in the seventh inning that proved to be the difference. The Screaming Eagles scored six times with two outs, including a grand slam.
Â
UIS's offense had a big day with 13 hits, including four home runs, a triple, and a double. Besides Monroe,
Brandon Bannon,
Kal Youngquist, and
Austin Alderman had homers. Bannon also had a triple, and Youngquist had a double.
Â
Youngquist scored three times in the game and had a team-high three hits. Bannon, Monroe, and Alderman all scored twice. Monroe and Alderman finished with three RBI, and Bannon drove in a pair of runners.
Ruben Markham reached base four times with two hits and two walks, and Alderman also walked twice.
Â
Brendan Anderson was the top pitcher on the day, going two innings in relief. He allowed no hits and two walks, and struck out three batters.
Â
UIS falls to 8-3 on the season. Saturday's second game was postponed until Sunday since there was not enough daylight remaining to get the game in. UIS and Southern Indiana will now play a doubleheader on Sunday, starting at 11 a.m.
