Maggie Juhlin scored twice in the first 139 seconds of the game, and the University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team held on for a 3-2 win over Parkside on Sunday at Kiwanis Stadium in Springfield, Ill.
Juhlin created a steal early in the game and caught the goalkeeper out of position for a goal just 19 seconds into the game. Exactly two minutes later, she got a loose ball just inside the box and drove it past the goalie.Â
Parkside got one goal back in the 6th minute, before UIS scored again at the 12-minute mark.
Lauren Griffin took a corner kick and found a streaking
Erin Bolskar for a header into the goal.
After that goal, the defenses for both teams tightened up. The Prairie Stars led by that 3-1 advantage at halftime, and they outshot Parkside 12-9 in the half.
The second half saw Parkside pressuring a little more than UIS in order to get back in the game. The Rangers finally scored in the 82nd minute. It had two free kicks after that about 15 yards outside the box, but the first one saw the shot attempt go over the goal, and the second cross into box was cleared by the Prairie Stars, helping UIS to hold on to the win.
Sierra Cenek took a team-high five shots, and she and Juhlin both had three shots on goal.
Bailey Cross made eight saves in the victory.
UIS is now 1-1-0 on the season. The Prairie Stars are off until their conference opener at Lewis next Sunday.
