The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team opened up the GLVC Tournament on Thursday morning with an 11-2 victory over Drury.
Â
The Prairie Stars broke the game open in the second inning with a two-out, seven-run rally. UIS had two on with two outs, when Nick Mayhofer hit a groundball to short. The shortstop misplayed it, and then an error by the catcher allowed
Zach Speaker to score. UIS took advantage of the error to score six more times, including a two-run double by
Zach Abfall and a three-run homer by
Chris Monroe.
Â
That was more than enough for
Justin Revels. The starter threw eight innings and allowed just six hits, one walk, and two runs. He struck out 10 in his outing.
Colton Thompson pitched a hitless ninth to close the game out.
Â
Ben Schanding had two hits, two runs, and two RBI in the game. Abfall also drove in two, had two hits, and scored once.
John Sechen and Mayerhofer both scored twice, and Speaker had one run and one RBI.
Â
UIS improves to 35-14-1. The Prairie Stars will play again on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against top-seed Quincy.
