John Sechen Sets School Record And Sparks Prairie Stars To GLVC Tournament Second-Round Win

University of Illinois Springfield baseball player John Sechen set a school record and sparked a big inning that propelled the Prairie Stars to a win during day two of the GLVC Championship Tournament. UIS stayed undefeated at the event with a 6-1 victory over Quincy.

Sechen entered the game with 148 career runs, which tied for the most in UIS history. In the top of third, he became the sole record holder with his 149th run. Sechen, who is among the NCAA's runs leaders this season, lead off the inning with a walk. Three out of the next four Prairie Stars batters also walked, allowing Sechen to stroll home with the record-breaking run.

UIS wasn't done in the inning, scoring five more times. Austin Alderman had the biggest hit with a two-run double to make it 5-0, and a squeeze bunt by Nick Mayerhofer capped off the scoring.

The Prairie Stars would not score again but they did not need to. Andrew Dean showed why he was voted the GLVC Pitcher of the Year with one of his top performances of the season. He did not give up a run in seven innings, and allowed just five hits and two walks. He struck out eight batters in the game, and became the second Prairie Stars player in history to surpass 100 strikeouts in a season. Dean was especially good with runners on base, holding Quincy to two-of-14 hitting in those situations.

R.D. Lutze, Ryan Jemar, and Colton Thompson closed out the game on the mound. Quincy scored once in the ninth after loading the bases and advancing on a wild pitch. The Hawks could never get the tying run up to the plate though.

Dean earned his 10th win of the season, tying his school single-season record from last season. His 20 wins in just two seasons is also a UIS career record.

Chris Monroe had two hits to lead UIS in that category. Sechen, Ben Schanding, Monroe, Ryan Markham, Zach Abfall, and Brandon Bandon had runs. RBI were collected by Markham, Abfall, Bannon, Alderman, and Mayerhofer.

UIS improves to 35-14-1 on the season. The Prairie Stars will be in action again on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the winner of tomorrow's Maryville/Southern Indiana contest.
