University of Illinois Springfield softball pitcher
Jaycee Craver shut out the top offense in the GLVC on Sunday. Her gem helped the Prairie Stars get a split against Drury at LOLJOS in Springfield, Ill.
Â
In the second game of the doubleheader, Craver's performance led to a 3-0 UIS victory. Craver added to her school record by throwing her 14th career shutout. She allowed just six hits and did not walk a batter. She struck out seven in the game.
Â
Craver had three one-two-three innings, and allowed just one hit in two other innings. Her most impressive inning came in the sixth when she faced the heart of Drury's lineup with three players batting over .350, including two over .400. She set the Panthers down in order with a ground out, fly out, and strikeout.
Â
Her two jams came in the first and seventh innings. In the first, she allowed two on with one out, but got a strikeout and a line out to end the threat. In the seventh, Drury loaded the bases with two outs, but a fly ball to right field ended the game.
Â
Offensively, UIS got all of the runs it needed with a three-run homer by
Calla Wickenhauser in the first inning. That hit scored
Natalie Cokel and
Morgan Edwards.
Haley Inman had two hits in the game for the Prairie Stars.
Â
In the first game, Drury won by a 5-2 margin. The Panthers were successful with two outs, scoring four of their five runs when the Prairie Stars needed just one more out to get out of an inning.
Â
Wickenhauser drove in a run in the first with a sacrifice fly that plated Inman. Drury took the lead with a two-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the fourth. The Panthers added two more insurance runs in the sixth, before UIS broke the run with another sacrifice fly, this one by
Morgan Edwards that scored Cokel, in the final inning.
Â
Payton Long allowed six hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Addison Bryant got the final four outs and allowed just one base runner. The pair combined for 10 strikeouts, including eight by Long.
Â
UIS is now 20-16 on the season and 9-5 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars are in action again next Saturday at Truman State.
