Women's Tennis Earns Program-First By Advancing To GLVC Tournament Semifinals

The University of Illinois Springfield women's tennis squad made program history by advancing to the GLVC Tournament semifinals for the first time. The Prairie Stars defeated Maryville in their first-round match by a 4-3 margin, after Kena Bere won two tiebreakers to give UIS the win.

At doubles, UIS and Maryville split the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, with the Prairie Stars winning at No. 1 by Neha Mokhasi and Ashley Long. Bere and Thenappan were tied 6-6 at No. 2 doubles before they won the tiebreaker by a 7-3 margin.

The Saints won three of the first five singles matches that finished. The UIS victories in that span were Ashley Long at No. 2 and Maegan Flight at No. 4.

With the team score tied at three, the No. 3 singles match with Bere decided the contest. Bere lost the first set 6-3, but bounced back to win the second set, 6-4. In the decided third set, the two players were tied 6-6, leading to a tiebreaker. Bere won her second tiebreaker of the day by another 7-3 margin.

UIS improves to 14-4 on the season. The No. 47 Prairie Stars will face No. 6 Indianapolis in the GLVC Semifinals on Saturday morning.
