The No. 12 University of Illinois Springfield baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the UIS Baseball Field to No. 10 Quincy. The Prairie Stars lost by scores of 4-2 and 10-0.
Â
Quincy was able to have more timely hitting on the afternoon as it was 10-of-30 (.333) when batting with a runner or runners on base, while UIS was just two-of-25 (.080) in those situations. One of the top highlights for UIS was
John Sechen having a hit in each game and extending his reached base streak to 20 contests.
Â
Sechen played a role in both of the Prairie Stars' runs in game one. In the first inning, he walked and then moved to third after two more batters gained base on balls. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Austin Alderman.
Â
Quincy tied the game in the second and took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the sixth inning. UIS got its final run on a solo homer by Sechen in the seventh. UIS had the tying run up to the plate in both the seventh and nine innings, but couldn't score again.
Â
Nick Mayerhofer had two hits in game one, and
Ruben Markham reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Alec Altmyer went 5 1/3 innings and struck out eight batters. He allowed three earned runs.
Joe Dittmar got the final 11 outs without allowing a hit.
Â
In game two, Quincy struck early with four runs in the first inning, and then iced the game with a grand slam in the fifth inning that made the score 10-0. Sechen,
Zach Speaker,
Chris Monroe, Alderman, and
Brandon Bannon had the team's five hits.
Trent Sidwell had the best pitching outing, going two innings in relief and allowing just one base runner on a walk.
R.D. Lutze and
Tyler Horvath also pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Â
UIS falls to 13-6-1 on the season and 4-4 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars host a three-game GLVC series with Maryville this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
