Jaycee Craver made University of Illinois Springfield softball history on Monday in Boliver, Mo. The senior pitcher won her 43rd career game, which is a new Prairie Stars record, breaking
Ali Haesele's record of 42 which was set last season. Craver's pitching helped UIS sweep a non-conference doubleheader over Southwest Baptist.
Â
Craver pitched the opening game and threw her 12th career shutout in UIS's 1-0 victory. Craver allowed just three hits and walked one. She struck out five batters. Her biggest jam came in the fifth inning when a double and bunt gave the Bearcats a runner on third with one out. Craver got a strikeout and then a groundout to preserve the shutout. She didn't allow a hit the rest of the way for her historic win.
Â
UIS got the game's only run in the four inning when
Bree Derhake hit a solo homer. That was the Prairie Stars only hit of the contest.
Â
In the second game, the Prairie Stars held on for a 3-1 victory. Peyton Long started and did not allow a run through four innings. She gave up just two hits and two walks, and struck out four in her first win as a Prairie Star.
Addison Bryant came into the game in the fifth and pitched the final three innings for a save. She allowed four hits and one unearned run.
Â
UIS got all three of its runs in the fifth.
Natalie Cokel started the inning with a double and scored on an
Ali Bortmess single. The Prairie Stars added two more runs with two outs on a wild pitch and a Derhake base hit. Bortmess and
Morgan Edwards had the final two runs for UIS.
Â
In the seventh, an error gave the Bearcats life, and they scored once and had bases loaded with two outs. Bryant got the next hitter to foul out to end the game.
Â
UIS improves to 10-8 on the year. The Prairie Stars will be home tomorrow after for a 1 p.m. game against Missouri Western at LOLJOS.
