The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) baseball team swept Saginaw Valley State University Friday's season-opening doubleheader in Emerson, Ga.
UIS (2-0) secured an 8-5 victory in Game 1 and an 11-3 win in Game 2.
GAME 1: UIS 8, SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 5
Zach Speaker went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Prairie Stars.
Chris Monroe finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs while
Ryan Fish went 2-for-3.
Nick Mayerhofer,
Nick Wisz and
Chris Mathieu rounded out UIS's nine hits.
Jordan Swiss went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Cardinals (0-2). Jacob Mansfield provided a double, while going 2-for-4. Gerrit Eding went 2-for-3, Collin Winters finished 2-for-4 and Derrek Clyde went 2-for-5. Martin Money rounded out Saginaw Valley State's 12 hits with a triple.
Justin Revels (1-0) earned the win. He struck out four batters, issued one walk and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in five innings.
R.D. Lutze picked up his first save of the season. He punched out three batters, walked one batter and gave up two hits in a scoreless ninth inning. Gunner Kay recorded one strikeout, issued zero walks and gave up one run on six hits in three innings.
Camden Dice (0-1) was given the loss. He struck out one batter, allowed two walks and surrendered seven runs on seven hits in one and two-thirds innings. Jacob Crossan fanned four batters, allowed zero walks yielded one run on two hits in three and one-third innings. Jacob Fantauzzo tallied two strikeouts, walked two batters and gave up zero runs on zero hits in two and two-thirds innings. Eric Fritz retired the only batter he faced.
Swiss drove in Andrew Burke on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Monroe singled in a run to even the score in the bottom of the first.
Clyde contributed a run-scoring single in the second as Saginaw Valley State took a 2-1 lead.
The Prairie Stars racked up six runs in the second. Mayerhofer contributed an RBI single and Speaker ripped a three-run double. Monroe provided an RBI single and scored later in the inning off a wild pitch.
During the fourth, Speaker added a run by scoring off a wild pitch.
Swiss belted a run-scoring double for the Cardinals in the fifth. Later in the inning, Winters knocked in Money on a sacrifice fly.
GAME 2: UIS 11, SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 3
In Game 2,
Ruben Markham went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a two-run single for UIS.
Austin Alderman finished 3-for-4 with a solo homer.
John Sechen delivered an RBI triple and a run-scoring single, while going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Chris Monroe also finished 2-for-3. Wisz,
Dylan Gilbert and
Brandon Bannon each added singles to round out UIS's 13 hits.
Swiss finished 3-for-3 with an RBI double for the Cardinals. Joshua Riggs produced a solo homer and a double, while going 2-for-4. Adam Turner connected for an RBI single, while Clyde and Money each capped off Saginaw Valley State's eight hits with singles.
Andrew Dean (1-0) collected the win. He fanned five batters, walked zero batters and yielded one run on six hits in five innings.
Tyler Horvath struck out a batter, allowed zero walks and gave up one run on one hit in one inning.
Joe Dittmar recorded a strikeout, walked one batter and issued one run on one hit in one inning.
Matt Johnston walked both of the batters he faced.
Trent Sidwell forced a double-play groundout and another groundout for his only two batters during the inning he pitched.
Brendan Anderson retired each of the three batters he faced, while punching out one.
Chase Gearing (0-1) was hit with the loss. He issued four walks and surrendered six runs on two hits in one-third of an inning. Alex Millhisler struck out a batter, gave up zero walks and allowed three runs on seven hits in two innings. Kyle Henigan fanned six batters, issued zero walks and gave up an unearned run on three hits in four and two-thirds innings. Ian Janssen punched out two batters, walked zero batters and yielded one run on one hit in one inning.
UIS poured in seven runs during the first. Speaker drove in Sechen on a sacrifice fly. Gilbert provided an RBI single, Monroe scored off a wild pitch and Markham singled in two runs.
Brandon Bannon knocked in Mayerhofer on a sacrifice fly and Sechen singled in a run.
Turner trims the deficit to 7-1 in the second for the Cardinals with a run-scoring single.
Markham delivered a homer for the Prairie Stars in the third. Sechen ripped a run-scoring triple to give UIS an eight-run advantage through three.
Swiss provided a run-scoring double in the sixth. Monroe responded with an RBI single in the bottom half in the inning as UIS led 10-2.
Riggs smashed a solo homer for Saginaw Valley State in the seventh.
Alderman cranked a solo homer for UIS in the eighth.
