Men's Soccer Earns GLVC Tournament Bid In Final Regular Season Contest

The University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team ended the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Kiwanis Stadium with a 1-0 win over Drury. The victory clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament for the Prairie Stars for the third straight season.

The two teams were balanced for the match, with UIS having just a narrow 51%-49% edge in possession time. The Prairie Stars took 12 total shots and four shots on goal, compared to eight shots and two shots on goal for Drury.

The difference in the scoreboard came in the 26th minute when UIS's Thiago Fernandes took a free kick from about 20 yards out. Drew Keller made a run to the left side of the net and Fernandes' pass hit him perfectly, and Keller put the ball in for the game's only goal.

Pijus Petkevicius earned the win in goal, making two saves in his fifth shutout of the year. In the final 10 minutes, he had to face two corner kicks, and made a save with 79 seconds left on the final Drury opportunity.

UIS improves to 9-7-2 overall, and 7-6-2 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars will find out their first-round GLVC Tournament opponent later today.
