University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's basketball junior
Lanie Hicks powered to 13 rebounds, more-than-doubling her previous career-high of six rebounds.
Maryville University (10-5, 4-2) handed UIS (5-8, 2-3) an 80-66 loss during Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup at TRAC.
The Saints capitalized on 42.0-percent (29-of-69) shooting while holding the Prairie Stars to a 28-percent (21-of-75) shooting clip from the floor. Maryville also capitalized on its transition offense, outscoring UIS 20-8 on fast-break points.
Lauren Ladowski led the Prairie Stars with 14 points and three steals. The freshman guard from St. John, Ind. knocked down 9-of-10 (90 percent) shots from the free-throw line.
Tehya Fortune delivered 12 points while
Val Meissner contributed 11 points.
Ellie Mitchell, Hicks and
Brianna Mefford each provided six points.
Jasmine Sangster tallied four points and
Katelyn Rosner added three points while
Gabrielle Sanders and
Erin Bolskar rounded out the UIS scoring effort with two points.
Kayla Steward paced the Saints with 21 points and two blocks. Mary Barton also provided 18 points. Abby Monis recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jayda Jansen scored 13 points.
Maryville finished plus-10 on the boards, outrebounding UIS 52-42.
The Prairie Stars knocked down 7-of-21 (33.3 percent) shots from 3-point range while the Saints hit 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) attempts from the perimeter.
UIS drained 17-of-20 (85 percent) shots from the free-throw line while Maryville made 17-of-21 (81.0 percent) attempts from the charity stripe.
The Prairie Stars turned the ball over only eight times while the Saints committed just 10 turnovers.
Sanders scored on the first possession to give UIS a 2-0 lead. Maryville scored the next seven points, but the Prairie Stars responded by tying the game at 7-all with 7 minutes, 41 seconds left in the first quarter. The contest remained a single-possession game for the remainder of the quarter. Maryville led 21-18 after the first quarter, which consisted of six lead changes and four ties.
Sangster hit a jumper on UIS's first possession to cut UIS's deficit to one. Steward scored on the following possession. Rosner capitalized on a bucket-and-one situation to tie the game at 23-all. Maryville went on an 8-0 run during the next 3:23 to take a 31-23 lead. The Saints held a 40-36 advantage at halftime.
Hicks drained a 3-pointer with 8:44 left in the third quarter to give UIS a 41-40 lead and cap off a 7-0 run. Both teams traded 6-0 runs as UIS led 47-46 with 4:59 left in the quarter. The Saints put together a 10-0 run that UIS never recovered from. Maryville led 58-51 after three quarters and outscored UIS 22-15 in the fourth quarter.
UIS caps off a five-game homestand with two GLVC matches at TRAC next week. The Prairie Stars battle Missouri S&T (5-6, 1-3) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. UIS then challenges Drury University (15-0, 5-0), ranked No. 3 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division II poll, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
