Prairie Stars Blast Past Pioneers, Complete Four-Game Sweep

EMERSON, GA – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) baseball team blasted five home runs to complete the four-game sweep against Malone University on Saturday.
 
Chris Monroe delivered two homers during the doubleheader to lead the Prairie Stars (4-3) past Malone (0-4). UIS routed Malone 9-1 in the opener and the Prairie Stars drubbed the Pioneers 16-4 in the nightcap.
 
GAME 1: UIS 9, MALONE 1
Myles Hann went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including a two-run double. Kenny Hansen finished 2-for-3. Monroe provided a homer, Michael Rothmund contributed a run-scoring double and Drew Harper added a double. The Prairie Stars also received hits from Nick Stokowski, Ryan Dufrene, Chris Mathieu and John Sechen, rounding out their 11 hits.
 
Joe Crank went 2-for-2 for the Pioneers while Jacob Mottice finished 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Damian Maglione connected for a double.
 
Justin Revels (1-0) earned the win. He struck out six batters, issued three walks and gave up one run on six hits in five innings. Kenny Brokop recorded two strikeouts, allowed one walk and two hits in scoreless innings. Mason Coon fanned two batters and gave up three walks and one hit in one and one-third scoreless innings. Sam Geraci retired both batters he faced and recorded a strikeout.
 
Alex Widmer walked a batter and surrendered one run on two hits in one inning. Clay Cooper (0-1) was tagged with the loss. He tallied three strikeouts, gave up two walks and yielded four runs on three hits in two and two-thirds innings. James Kontur struck out a batter, allowed two walks and surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits in three and one-third innings. Trevor Beerman gave up one walk and one hit in one scoreless inning. Anthony Stillwagon yielded two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning. Tyrus Jones struck out a batter and allowed zero runs on hit in two-thirds of an inning.
 
Hann drove in a run on a single to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
 
Matt Noel evened the score in the bottom half of the first on an RBI groundout.
 
During the third, Hann belted a two-run double and Dufrene connected on a run-scoring single.
 
The Prairie Stars went up 5-1 in the fourth when Rothmund doubled in a run.
 
Cole Taylor knocked in Sechen on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
 
Mathieu singled in a run during the seventh to put UIS ahead 7-1.
 
During the ninth, Monroe smashed a homer and Sechen produced an RBI single.
 
GAME 2: UIS 16, MALONE 4
Rothmund delivered a three-run blast and a double, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Hann provided a three-run blast and went 2-for-3. Stokowski smashed a two-run jack, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Monroe provided a two-run shot. Taylor produced a two-run double while Jack Schaaf smacked a double and tallied two RBIs. Harper, Tyler Hilton and Ryan Deering each contributed doubles. The Prairie Stars also received hits from Hansen and Ben Schanding. UIS collected 14 hits.
 
Jones and Austin White both recorded two-run doubles. Dyllan West connected for a double and Mottice added a single to round out Malone's four hits.
 
Andrew Dean (1-0) picked up the win. He punched out six batters, yielded three walks and surrendered four runs on four hits in five and two-thirds of an inning. Cam Zunkel retired each of the four batters, striking out one batter in one and one-third innings.
 
Kyle Kovach (0-1) was hit with the loss. He recorded three strikeouts, surrendered four walks, and gave up five runs on three hits in three innings. Jordan Yoder struck out a batter, issued two walks and allowed three runs on two hits in one and one-third innings. Chandler Stahl gave up four runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. Cody Ballay walked two batters and surrendered two runs on two hits in one inning. Tommy Walker struck out a batter and allowed two runs on three hits in one inning.
 
Schaaf belted a two-run single to give UIS a 2-0 lead in the first.
 
Rothmund blasted a three-run homer in the third.
 
Hann ripped a three-run shot in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead.
 
The Prairie Stars compiled six runs in the sixth. Taylor doubled in two runs while Stokowski and Monroe each smacked two-run homers.
 
White and Jones each cracked two-run doubles in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Hilton and Deering both provided RBI doubles in the seventh.
 
UP NEXT
UIS take on William Jewell College (3-2) in a three-game series. The two teams battle in 1 p.m. games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
