University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's basketball junior
Tehya Fortune racked up a career-high 22 points during Saturday's 64-61 loss to Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Ky.
The 5-foot-7 junior guard from Chicago also came up with four steals.
Trailing by 12 points with 6 minutes, 16 seconds left in the game, the Prairie Stars (3-7) sparked a 12-2 run to cut their deficit to 59-57 with 2:12 remaining. The Thoroughbreds (8-5) hung onto the lead and secured the victory.
Kentucky State led 17-10 after the first quarter, but UIS evened the score at 30-all at halftime. The Thoroughbreds pulled ahead to a 53-43 lead after three quarters. UIS outscored Kentucky State 18-11 during the fourth quarter.
Jasmine Sangster delivered 18 points.
Ellie Mitchell recorded 13 points and eight rebounds.
Val Meissner contributed six points and
Katelyn Rosner rounded out the UIS scoring effort with two points.
Gabrielle Sanders and
Brianna Mefford blocked three shots and two shots, respectively.
Brooke Wallace powered to 22 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks for the Thoroughbreds. Erica Jones tallied 18 points. Amani Williams notched 11 points, six assists and three steals. Allenia Ponder also collected four steals.
Despite finishing minus-three on turnovers, Kentucky State outscored UIS 20-8 on fast-break points and 22-13 off turnovers. UIS committed 22 turnovers while Kentucky State turned the ball over 25 times.
The Thoroughbreds also finished with a 20-8 advantage on second points.
Kentucky State converted 25-of-52 (48.1 percent) shots from the field and 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) attempts from 3-point range. The Prairie Stars drained 24-of-61 (39.3 percent) shots from the floor and 7-of-32 (21.9 percent) attempts from the perimeter.
Kentucky State made 12-of-19 (63.2 percent) shots from the free-throw line while UIS hit each of their six shots from the charity stripe.
The Prairie Stars, which are 0-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) action, return to conference play by hosting McKendree University (8-3, 2-0) next Saturday at 1 p.m. in TRAC.
