SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) men's soccer team fell to Missouri S&T in a 2-1 loss during Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.
After trailing 1-0 in the second half, the Miners (2-3-1, 1-3) mustered up two goals to rally past the Prairie Stars (3-3, 3-1).
"We expect more, defensively," UIS coach
Adam Hall said. "The goals we conceded [on Sunday] did not reflect the defending we saw here on Friday."
Alex Morais scored the lone goal for UIS.
Felipe Andrade and Unnar Ulfarsson notched goals for the Miners while Ulfarsson, Ian Hansen and Martin Klevjer each dished out assists.
The Miners brought physicality with their offense, committing 22 fouls throughout the contest.
Missouri S&T outshot UIS by a 21-to-17 margin. The Prairie Stars compiled a 6-to-4 shot advantage in the first half and the Miners put together a 17-to-11 advantage in the second half. UIS registered 10 shots on goal throughout the contest, but was unable to seal the match.
"I'm disappointed we didn't convert more of our chances. We had some great one-on-ones with their keeper and didn't convert. Several players need to be more clinical with their finishing."
During the 37th minute, David Murphy drilled a shot that nearly gave the Miners a 1-0 lead, but the shot struck the post.
UIS committed a foul in the 49th minute that resulted in a Missouri S&T penalty kick. Tim Schreffl took the shot, but UIS goalkeeper
Tommy Geile recorded the save. Sean Perryman rebounded the shot and took one of his own, but Geile sent the shot away.
Morais took aim with the net 52 minutes into the match and fired a stripe from 30 yards out to give UIS a 1-0 lead.
"Alex scored a fantastic goal."
During the 60th minute, Andrade delivered the equalizer off passes from Klevjer and Ulfarsson. Ulfarsson leads the GLVC with four assists.
Missouri S&T took a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute after Hansen tore up the field and found Ulfarsson for the game-winning score.
Naba Alzhyri and
Jack Coombes tallied two shots on goal while the Prairie Stars received shots on target from Morais,
Steven Albers,
Daniel Kemp,
Ahmadou Ndiaye,
Fernando Sanz de Galdeano and
Will Teichman.

The Prairie Stars venture to St. Louis, MO for two conference matches next weekend. UIS encounters Maryville University (5-1, 3-1) on Friday at 2 p.m. and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) (3-2-1, 3-1) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Maryville is ranked No. 19 in the latest United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II poll. With UIS, Maryville and UMSL each taking part in a five-way tie for second place in the conference, the Prairie Stars look to earn solid conference wins next weekend.
"We need to stay positive. We definitely competed well enough to win [on Sunday]. Now, we will get back to the grind next week."
