VIENNA, WV --- The University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team fell in their season opener to Ohio Valley by a score of 2-0. Playing on the road to open their second straight season under the direction of
Adam Hall, the Prairie Stars managed just three shots on the day.
Illinois Springfield fired first as
Mario Falsone put a shot on net in the 11
th minute, but was turned away by the Fighting Scots keeper. Newcomer,
Rhys Wallace, put the next shot on goal for the Prairie Stars in the 21
st minute, but again, the UIS effort was saved.
Tommy Geile made one save in the first half, which occurred in the 17
th minute, as both teams played to a tie after 45 minutes. In the opening minutes of the second half, Geile was put to the test, but made two saves in the first five minutes to keep the match scoreless. However, the Fighting Scots got on the board in the 50
th minute, beating the Prairie Stars keeper to take a 1-0 lead.
Jack Coombes had the Prairie Stars only shot in the second half, putting a header just wide in the 79
th minute. Ohio Valley countered immediately and was able to push their lead to 2-0 in the 83
rd minute.
UIS was outshot on the game 14-to-3 including a 7-to-2 disadvantage in shots on goal.
Falsone and Wallace had the only two shots on goal for the Prairie Stars while Geile recorded five saves in goal.
The Prairie Stars will conclude their opening weekend at (RV) Tiffin University on Saturday for a 1:00 PM CT kick-off.
