INDIANAPOLIS, IN --- The Prairie Stars (31-19) ended their record breaking regular season with a split at the University of Indianapolis (27-23), winning 3-1 before falling in the final game of the regular season 10-9. Illinois Springfield locked up the third slot in the GLVC east division and will play the second seeded Quincy Hawks from the west in the GLVC Tournament opening game.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 3, INDIANAPOLIS 1
The Prairie Stars got on the board early with two runs in the second inning, capitalizing on an error from the Greyhounds.
Drew Harper picked up both RBI, driving in
Trey Hannam and
John Sechen on a two-out single to left field.
The Greyhounds scored an unearned run in the third to cut the deficit in half and the score remained 2-1 until the sixth when
Michael Rothmund hit his 23rd home run of the season, giving UIS a 3-1 lead.
Cameron Zunkel (3-2) completed the game, picking up his third win of the season, throwing a complete-game, giving up just one unearned run. Zunkel surrendered just six hits and struck out two in the win.
GAME TWO: INDIANAPOLIS 10, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 9
In a much more offensively centered game, both teams used a bit of drama in the late innings to cap off the regular season schedule. UIndy took a 1-0 lead in the first but
Zach Patterson singled in the top of the second, driving in
Austin Muench to tie the score.
The Greyhounds retook the lead in the bottom half and led 3-1 before Muench drove in two on a triple to right center in the fourth, tying the game at three.
After giving up another run, Rothmund connected for yet another home run, tying the game at four.
Two runs in the seventh for UIndy gave the home team a 6-4 lead but UIS came back with five runs in their last at bat to take a 9-6 lead.
Kenny Hansen singled in two runs before
Cole Taylor drove in the go-ahead run.
Will Stanka got a pinch hit two RBI single, putting UIS up 9-6 heading into the bottom half of the ninth.
The Greyhounds fought back though, scoring four in their last at-bat of the season to take the game 10-9.
Just five of the 10 runs UIndy scored were earned as the Prairie Stars committed four errors in the final game.
GLVC TOURNAMENT
With the standings set, the bracket for the 2017 GLVC Tournament has been set, and the Prairie Stars will play the first game of the Championship, taking on the second seed out of the west, the Quincy Hawks. The game will kick-off the tournament, with the first pitch being thrown at 9:00 AM on Thursday, May 11
th.
With a win, UIS will play Friday, May 12
th at 7:30 PM and with a loss, the Prairie Stars would play the 12:30 PM game on Friday.
This is the Prairie Stars second straight GLVC tournament appearance and third in their last four seasons.
