INDIANAPOLIS, IN --- The Prairie Stars (25-21, 11-11) completed their weekend sweep of Saint Joseph's and the University of Indianapolis by taking two games from the Greyhounds by scores of 12-1 and 8-1. UIS extended their winning streak to five games with the wins, one off their season-high, and moved up to sixth place in the GLVC standings.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 12, INDIANAPOLIS 1
The Prairie Stars ended the first game early, taking down the Greyhounds in five innings after scoring the final 11 runs of the game. UIS plated the first run of the game in the second inning when
Alexa Brown reached on a fielders' choice and
Erin Stroup came into score on a UIndy error.
The Greyhounds responded with a run in the bottom half but it was all UIS after that.
In the third, UIS plated three runs, the first coming on another error from UIndy.
Morgan Edwards cashed in her first RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring
Amanda Gosbeth before Stroup double in
Lakyn Wagoner to conclude the rally.
Leading 4-1, the Prairie Stars scored three more times in the fourth, the first coming on a bases loaded walk from Gosbeth, scoring
BriAnna Edgar before Wagoner drove in
Ali Haesele with a ground ball and Edwards recorded another sacrifice fly to push the score to 7-1.
In the fifth, UIS broke the game open with five runs as Haesele, Gosbeth, and Edwards all drove in runs, capped by
Alexa McClaughry picking up a pinch-hit RBI single.
Haesele (14-6) threw another complete-game, throwing five innings and allowing just four hits. The junior struck out six, picking up her third win in her last four starts.
Wagoner led the way with three hits on the game, scoring twice and driving in a run. Edgar, Torry, and Gosbeth each had two hits apiece , all scoring at least two runs as well.
GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 8, INDIANAPOLIS 1
Much like game one, early scoring and dominate pitching was the story for UIS as they completed their four-game weekend sweep. Edwards put the Prairie Stars on the board in the firs with an RBI single before
Erin Stroup blasted a solo shot in the second inning to give UIS a 2-0 lead. Gosbeth added to that lead later in the inning with an RBI single, scoring
Bree Derhake.
Up 3-0, the Prairie Stars surrendered their first run of the game in the third but held the damage and kept a 3-1 advantage.
Haesele doubled to left center in the sixth, scoring
Katie Wooldridge before the Prairie Stars pushed four more runs across in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The final blow of the game came when Edgar blasted a three-run home run to right, putting the lead to 8-1 where it became final.
Edwards collected three more hits in game two while Haesele and Stroup each had two hits.
Jaycee Craver (7-9) picked up the win with a complete-game, allowing seven hits and striking out two.
The Prairie Stars are now 4-2 against the Greyhounds in their last six games, dating back to 2015, beating Indianapolis the last three times they have held home field.
