CHARLESTON, IL --- In the final weekend of the season, the Prairie Stars went 1-2 against Bellarmine, Hanover, and Division I opponent Eastern Illinois.
Cole Buehnerkemper, the all-time leader in Division II wins in UIS history, picked up his 50
th and 51
st singles victories against Hanover and Eastern Illinois. UIS fell to Bellarmine 5-4 before blanking Hanover 9-0 and falling to Eastern 4-3.
BELLARMINE 5, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 4
In the final GLVC match of the season, the Prairie Stars dropped another close match after taking two of three doubles matches.
David Perez and
Sam Clarke won 8-4 while
Parker Featherston and
Christian Timm followed suit with a win of the same margin.
In singles, Perez and Logan Burgess-Hayes each won in singles but UIS wasn't able to get the decisive fifth match as both
Grant Fitzsimmons and
Riley Muren fell in straight sets. Buehnerkemper fell in three sets, dropping his match 6-0, 1-6, 6-2.
ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 9, HANOVER 0
In the first match of a tri-team match on the campus of Eastern Illinois, Buehnerkemper and Burgess-Hayes rolled to a 6-1 doubles win before Buhnerkemper took care of business in singles as well, winning 6-4, 6-1. This gave him the milestone victory of his 50
th singles win, far and away the best in UIS history.
Clark and Perez won their doubles match 7-5 while
Christian Timm and Muren did the same.
The top-five players for UIS all won in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 shutout from Perez in the fourth spot. Muren took the only three-set victory of the day, winning 6-2, 5-7, 10-4 to close out the shutout.
EASTERN ILLINOIS 4, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 3
In the final match of the regular season, the Prairie Stars suffered another close defeat to the hands of the Panthers from Eastern Illinois. Playing Division I rules, where winning 2-of-3 in doubles gets you just one point, UIS surrendered that point after Burgess-Hayes and Buehnerkemper were the lone victors, winning 6-1.
In singles, Buehnerkemper concluded his perfect 4-0 day, with a 7-5, 6-0 victory to cap off his singles career with his 51
st victory. Burgess-Hayes and Perez each won their match, as Burgess-Hayes won in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and Perez 6-3, 6-3.
UIS finished the season with a 7-12 overall mark and 1-5 record in GLVC play.
