Prairie Stars Conclude Florida Swing with 7-1 Record

CLERMONT, FL --- The Prairie Stars improved their overall record to 13-10 as they ran their winning streak to six games with a sweep of Millersville and Hillsdale on the final day of the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. Illinois Springfield used a come-from-behind victory in game one to beat Millersville 5-4 before using seven unanswered runs in against Hillsdale to take control in the final game.

GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 5, MILLERSVILLE 4
With an 8:00 AM first pitch, it was a cold start to the day but UIS jumped out early, scoring a run in the first courtesy of a double from Erin Stroup and RBI single from senior, BriAnna Edgar.

Jaycee Craver retired the first three batters she faced but surrendered two runs in the second, which was aided by a Prairie Star error. The Prairie Stars made two more errors in the third which helped Millersville score twice more, increasing their lead to 4-1.

The Prairie Stars cut into the lead in the fifth though, as Haley Inman began the rally with a bunt single and advanced to third on a double from Alexa Brown. Madi Torry brought home Inman with a bunt single but UIS stranded two, trailing 4-3.

In the seventh, down a run, UIS had two outs and nobody on but an error from Millersville extended the inning, which was followed by an 0-2 single to center from Edgar. After being down to their final out and final strike, Morgan Edwards walked to load the bases before Lakyn Wagoner played hero and singled to right field, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs, giving UIS a 5-4 lead.

Rachel Goff threw a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to close out the game. UIS outhit Millersville 9-to-7 on the game but committed five errors. However, Goff threw 5.0 innings of relieve, giving up just three hits and walking none to pick up the win. It was Goff's second win of the week and second straight appearance in which she gave up no earned runs.

GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 7, HILLSDALE 3
Illinois Springfield closed out a dominate week with yet another dominating performance. Despite falling behind early on a lead off homerun, UIS did what they've done all week and rallied from behind, scoring seven straight runs in the third and fourth innings.

In the third, spark plug, Alexa Brown singled to leadoff the innings and advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a Madi Torry single.

UIS broke the game open in the fourth when Wagoner began the inning with a single, preceding walks to Ali Haesele and Katie Wooldridge to load the bases. Once again, Brown delivered a two-RBI single, scoring Haesele and Wagoner, giving UIS a 3-1 lead. Another run came in on a Hillsdale error but it was Stroup who delivered the final blow, blasting a three-run homerun to center field, giving UIS a 7-1 lead. This is the freshman shortstops second homerun of the year and is now the third UIS player to eclipse 10 RBI on the season.

Haesele threw six innings, giving up just the one run on five hits, striking out seven, concluding a stellar week in the circle. The junior is now 8-3 on the season and has won her last five starts.

PRAIRIE STAR NOTES: UIS extends its current winning streak to six games, matching the second longest streak in program history, last accomplished in the 2016 season … The longest winnings streak is seven games which was also done in 2016 … The six straight wins on a neutral field is the longest such streak in UIS history … Four players hit over .400 in Florida and seven players eclipsed the .300 mark for the eight games … UIS out hit their opponents 75-to-41 in the eight games and outscored them 43-16 … As a team, the Prairie Stars hit .342 on the week while UIS pitchers held opponents to a mere .203 average … Rachel Goff boasted a 0.89 ERA and 2-0 record, throwing 20.1 innings and giving up just two earned runs … Ali Haesele posted a perfect 4-0 mark, throwing 25.0 innings and striking out 30 batters, walking just three … Lakyn Wagoner led the way, hitting .500 on the trip (12-for-24) with a double and three triples, driving in eight runs … Erin Stroup and Madi Torry each had ten hits … Stroup had five doubles and one homerun, slugging .720 on the week

UIS will now return to the Midwest to begin GLVC action, beginning with a road swing to Missouri – St. Louis and Maryville. UIS will square off against the Tritons on Saturday at 12 and 2 before taking on the Saints on Sunday at the same time.
