Dominate Pitching Leads to Prairie Star Sweep

CLERMONT, FL --- The Prairie Stars improved to 5-1 on their Florida trip with a 6-1 victory over Ohio Dominican and 2-0 win over Ferris State. Illinois Springfield has now won four straight games, their longest such streak of the season and improve their record to 11-10.

UIS surrendered just one run on the day as Ali Haesele (7-3) began the day with a complete game three-hitter, surrendering just one run. This was then bested by senior Rachel Goff (1-1), who picked up her first win of the season in dominate fashion, throwing a complete game one hit shutout.

GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 6, OHIO DOMINICAN 1
The Prairie Stars began the day by jumping on top of the Panthers 1-o in the second inning when Amanda Gosbeth singled in the first run of the day, scoring Lakyn Wagoner. In the fifth, UIS added to that lead when Wagoner roped a bases clearing triple to right-center, scoring three and pushing the score to 4-0.

The Panthers scored their only run of the game in the sixth on a two-out single, but Haesele ended the rally by striking out the final batter on a 3-2 pitch.

UIS responded in kind, scoring two in the top of the seventh – all with two outs – as Morgan Edwards singled to start the rally and scored along with Wagoner on singles from Goff and Haesele.

The Prairie Stars closed out the game with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 2, FERRIS STATE 0
Staying with the theme of the day, the Prairie Stars rallied behind dominate pitching, as Goff threw a complete game shutout on a mere 56 pitches, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Goff allowed just three base runners, a single and walk in the second and via error in the third. However, the senior retired the final 14 batters of the game, not allowing a runner after a one-out error in the third.

UIS left seven runners on base in the first five innings, leaving at least one runner on in every inning. That changed in the sixth when Wagoner lead off with a triple to right field and came in to score when Goff doubled

In the next at-bat. Alexa Brown gave UIS a two-run cushion with a two-out RBI single to right center.
Goff finished the game with a seven pitch final inning, inducing a pop up and two fly outs. It was the third shutout by a UIS pitcher this season, joining Haesele who has two.

PRAIRIE STAR NOTES: Lakyn Wagoner went 4-for-6 on the day with three runs, double, three RBI, and two triples … BriAnna Edgar recorded three hits, including a double and walk … Seven Prairie Stars had at least two hits and eight batters reached base at least twice on the day … UIS outhit their two opponents 19-to-4 on the day and struck out just three times … Goff and Haesele combined to hold batters to a .087 average, allowing just five base runners in 14 innings.

UIS will take another off day on Tuesday before ending their Florida swing with a doubleheader on Wednesday against Concord and Hillsdale at 8:00 and 1:00 ET.
