ROSEMONT, IL --- The Prairie Stars (5-5) won their first game of the day in dominating fashion, beating Findlay 6-1 behind a gem from
Jaycee Craver. Illinois Springfield was unable to complete the sweep for the day though, falling 5-2 to Ashland in the day's final game.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 6, FINDLAY 1
The Prairie Stars got on the board early and often, scoring a run in the second followed by two in both the third and fifth inning to take a commanding 5-o lead over the Oilers. Craver (2-2) allowed just one baserunner in the first three innings and worked around an error in the fourth to keep the Oilers off the board.
Meanwhile, UIS took the lead in the second after a leadoff double from
Erin Stroup started a rally, ending with an RBI double down the left field line from senior,
Amanda Gosbeth. In the third,
Katie Wooldridge led off the inning with a single and after an error from the Oilers, came into score on an RBI groundout from
Bree Derhake.
Morgan Edwards concluded the scoring with an RBI single to left.
Stroup and
Allison Rose each drove in another run in the fifth before Findlay finally put one across to make the score 5-1. UIS tagged on one more run in the sixth but it was more than enough for Craver, who went the distance, giving up just one run (zero earned), on three hits while striking out three.
GAME TWO: ASHLAND 5, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 2
The bats fell silent in the second game as UIS managed just four hits on the game.
Brittany Moore (0-2) took the loss in the circle, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits across four innings of work.
Rachel Goff finished the final three innings, giving up just one hit in relief.
Errors hurt the Prairie Stars, as they committed three in the game. Ashland took a 2-0 lead in the second, capitalizing on two Prairie Star errors and then put three more across in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
UIS got on the board in the sixth when
Haley Inman began the rally with an infield single. This was followed by a near homerun from
Lakyn Wagoner, who hit the top of the fence in right center field, scoring Inman and strolling into third for her first career triple. Wagoner came home on the next play on a sacrifice fly from Derhake.
Wagoner, Stroup, Inman, and
Ali Haesele accounted for the four UIS hits on the day while Edwards and
BriAnna Edgar each drew a walk.
