Prairie Stars Beat McKendree in Harmon’s Finale

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Paxton Harmon delivered the final blow to the Bearcats (9-17, 3-15) in an 83-75 win on senior night to close out his career at Illinois Springfield. With the Prairie Stars (9-18, 4-14) up just six with 1:31 to play, Harmon knocked down his final shot from the field as a Prairie Star, hitting a dagger three to put UIS up by nine with 63 seconds to play. The senior then closed out the game with two final free throws to seal up an eight-point win on the final night of the season.

For the ninth time this season --- the most of any UIS player --- Harmon led the Prairie Stars in scoring, putting in 19 points on the night, hitting 5-of-8 from deep. The five three's moved him into a tie for seventh place all-time with 88 career three's in just two seasons.

The Prairie Stars trailed early as the Bearcats got off to a hot start, leading 7-2 in the first few minutes. A three from Eddie Longmeyer tied the game at 12 at the 13:21 mark before Harmon hit his first triple of the night to give UIS a three-point lead.

The two teams traded leads until McKendree went up 30-22 with 5:24 remaining in the half. However, a layup from Lijah Donnelly and five straight points from Logan Gonce put UIS within one before Harmon connected from deep again to give UIS a 32-30 lead, capping a 10-0 run.

Tied at 37 with eight seconds left, Longmeyer took the inbounds pass and went the length of the court, putting in a layup at the buzzer to give UIS a 39-37 advantage at the break.

From then on, it was all Prairie Stars as they gave up the lead just once but never allowed McKendree to lead in the second half. Leading by as much as 13 in the second half, UIS cruised to the eight-point win, as Harmon put the final touches on a brilliant two-year career.

UIS hit their final six free throws down the stretch as well as three of their final four shots from the field.

To go along with Harmon's 19, Longmeyer also put in 19 on the night and grabbed nine rebounds and dished three assists.

Gonce played the point poetically on the night, putting in a career-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting while grabbing six rebounds and dishing six assists. The 17 points eclipsed his previous career-high of 15 which was accomplished last February at Missouri S&T. His six rebounds are also a career-high while the six dimes matched his career best.

Freshman guard, Lijah Donnelly also had a big night, scoring 16 points with four boards, two assists, two steals, and a block.

The Prairie Stars end their 2016-17 campaign by sweeping McKendree in the season series and winning back-to-back games against the Bearcats for the fourth time in program history.
