Balanced Attack Leads UIS to 20th Win; Clinch GLVC Tournament Berth

INDIANAPOLIS, IN --- The Prairie Stars (20-8, 11-4) notched their ninth consecutive win with a 3-0 sweep of the Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis (12-17, 7-9), and in doing so, clinch their first berth to the GLVC Conference Tournament.

Illinois Springfield had five players with at least six kills and attacked at a .278 clip for the match to beat the Greyhounds 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.

A 7-2 run in the opening set gave UIS an 11-7 lead to which they traded points the rest of the set to take the opener 25-22. The Prairie Stars opened the second set with a 6-0 run to take control and then scored eight unanswered to lead 22-11. However, UIndy scored nine of ten to bring the set to 23-20 before UIS rattled off the final two points to go up 2-0.

In the third, the Prairie Stars led 15-9 before the Greyhounds put together another big run, scoring eight of nine to take a 17-16 lead. UIS countered with seven of the next eight to go up 23-18 but UIndy responded with the next four. But, just like the second set, UIS closed it out with the final two points to close out the sweep.

Alyssa Hasler and Taylor Bauer each led the way with 10 kills apiece while Brianna Bush added nine and Alli Splitt seven. Jailyn Borum had six kills and eight digs. In addition to having a balanced offensive attack, UIS had five players with at least eight digs, but were led by Tiffany Wentworth with nine digs and 30 assists.

The Prairie Stars long broke their single-season wins record --- which stood at 11 --- and now notched their 20th win of the season. UIS won 23 matches in 2007, which is the most in a single-season since 2003, which UIS could tie if they were to win out.

UIS has their final home match of the season on Tuesday as they take on Maryville University at 7 PM before concluding the season with road matches at (RV) McKendree and Missouri – St. Louis. UIS has already played each of them, beating both Maryville and UMSL but falling to McKendree in four sets.

With the win, UIS clinched their berth to the GLVC Championship, which will be held at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, IL on November 17-19. UIS cannot finish worse than 6th in the division.
