INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's soccer team edged the University of Indianapolis with a 1-0 victory during Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.
"The girls came ready to play," UIS coach
Erin Egolf said. "You could see in the first five minutes that they were hungry. We had a quality performance and remained consistent for 90 minutes."
Madisyn Coudriet converted the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to guide the Prairie Stars (7-4-3, 4-4-2) past the Greyhounds (6-4-1, 5-3-1).
Courtney Johnson recorded the sixth shutout of her career as she rejected each of the four shots she faced.
"The entire team fought for this win from the first to last whistle of the game," Johnson commented. "It was a team effort to shut down Indianapolis and I couldn't be more proud to play alongside this team."
The Prairie Stars outshot the Greyhounds by a 13-to-8 margin and held a 7-to-4 advantage in shots on goal.
"We had some really good chances," Egolf continued.
"As a collective, we dominated the field most of the match," Coudriet acknowledged. "Unfortunately, we were unlucky a couple of times and couldn't find the back of the net."
Both teams remained scoreless for the first 78 minutes. UIS was awarded a free kick in the 79th minute and Coudriet connected for the go-ahead goal.
"
Erin Bolskar was fouled just outside of the box. I saw the keeper leave to check her post and the rest of the team had their backs turned. I took the shot and it went in for the goal."
"Madisyn had the awareness and composure to step up and finish a wonderful free kick," Egolf added.
Meghan Delaney fired three shots on goal,
Valentina Rodriguez provided two shots on goal, Coudriet scored on her only shot on target and
Emily Matsen tallied a shot on goal.
The Greyhounds received shots on target from Stephanie Burdsall, Michele Govern, Carah Kreimer and Taylor Peck. Indianapolis goalkeeper Caitlynn MacKenzie went against seven shots and came up with six saves. She ranks fifth in the GLVC with an .870 save percentage.
Indianapolis is currently fourth place in the GLVC standings while UIS moved into a tie for eighth with Lewis University (4-5-2, 3-4-2)
"When you get a shutout on the road, it's always going to give you a good opportunity to be successful, so credit Courtney [Johnson] and the back line for their play."
UIS continues the GLVC season with two conference matches next weekend. The Prairie Stars take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (2-8-1, 1-6-1) on Friday at 12 p.m. in Somers, WI. UIS then battles Lewis for conference position on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium.
"We need to keep the momentum going and get a couple of good results next weekend."
