INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The University of Indianapolis picked up a 2-1 win over the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) men's soccer team during Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.
Javier Steinwascher produced two goals to lead the Greyhounds (7-3-1, 6-2-1). Steinwascher ranks second in the conference for goals (7) and is tied for fourth in the conference for points (14). James Jenkins dished out two assists. Jenkins ranks third in the conference for points (15) and assists (5).
Rhys Wallace netted the lone goal for the Prairie Stars (5-6-1, 5-4-1). The junior defender from Kilmarnock, Scotland has notched three goals on the season.
Jenkins found an opening for Steinwascher two minutes into the match. Steinwascher drove up the field and drilled a shot from outside of the box on the left side to put Indianapolis on the board. Jenkins was awarded the assist.
One minute later,
Alex Zarco made a steal in the backfield to create an immediate one-on-one situation. On the way to the goal, Zarco was tugged from behind and Indianapolis received a red card for committing a professional foul.
Rhys Wallace took the free kick and converted the equalizer.
With less than six minutes remaining, Jenkins tore up the left sideline. Jenkins sent a pass to Steinwascher in the center of the box and Steinwascher contributed his second goal of the day. The assist was credited to Jenkins. Steinwascher has recorded three game-winning goals on the season.
The Greyhounds outshot the Prairie Stars by a 14-to-5 margin.
Indianapolis goalkeeper Miles Palmer faced four shots and came up with three saves while UIS goalkeeper
Benjamin Shuty rejected six of the eight shots he faced.
Wallace scored on his only shot on goal.
Javier Milla,
Jack Coombes and
Mario Falsone each added shots on target.
Indianapolis moved up to third place in the GLVC standings while UIS is tied for sixth.
The Prairie Stars are scheduled for two GLVC matches next weekend. UIS battles with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (3-7-1, 3-5-1) on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Somers, WI. The Prairie Stars then clash with Lewis University (9-3, 8-2) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium. Lewis is currently second in the conference standings.
