SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team will honor its four seniors on Friday night, prior to taking on Robert Morris University – Springfield. This will serve as the final non-conference match of the season before gearing up for the final stretch of seven Great Lakes Valley Conference matches to close out the regular season, beginning with Maryville University on Saturday.
SETTING THE SCENE
Illinois Springfield (15-8, 7-4) comes into the weekend winners of their last four matches, one short of tying the UIS Division II all-time mark set in 2012 of five consecutive wins. The Prairie Stars currently have the second longest winning streak in the GLVC behind only Missouri – St. Louis, who has won five straight.
RMU-Springfield comes to Springfield with a 1-19 record, beating Silver Lake College in four-sets for their lone win of the season.
Maryville University (2-22, 1-10) won their first GLVC match of the season, beating Southern Indiana in five-sets, erasing a 2-0 deficit. Since then, the Saints have dropped their next ten GLVC matches, taking just one set in the process.
A LOOK AT THE GLVC
With three weeks remaining in the regular season, UIS sits second in the GLVC Central Division, behind McKendree, who is the lone undefeated team in conference play. In order to make the GLVC Tournament, you must either win your division or finish as a top-five wildcard team. UIS currently sits as the second best wildcard team behind only Bellarmine.
KEEP AN EYE OUT
UIS faces a fairly favorable schedule coming down the stretch, as only two teams currently have a record above .500. However, the Prairie Stars will face Indianapolis (12-12, 7-4) on the road, which will have tiebreaker implications.
The remaining opponents on the Prairie Stars schedule have a combined winning percentage of .378 (68-112) and if you remove McKendree from that mix, that number drops to .319.
STILL THE BEST
With eight matches remaining in the regular season slate,
Alyssa Hasler still leads the conference in total blocks with 115, averaging 1.40 blocks per set. These numbers put her in the company of the best in the nation as she ranks fourth in blocks per set and third in total blocks.
Additionally, Hasler now sits second in the GLVC in attack percentage (.357) behind only Mary Rolf of Rockhurst.
SENIOR NIGHT CEREMONY
Prior to the match, UIS will recognize four seniors:
Ally Vicsik,
Courtney Schutt,
Tiffany Sunderlin, and
Lexi Hall. The seniors will be recognized immediately following the match warm-ups and directly prior to the match.
ALL-TIME RESULTS
UIS won the only match-up between these two teams, beating RMU-Springfield in straight sets in 2013.
UIS is 6-3 all-time against Maryville, winning the match-up last year in straight sets. UIS is just 2-3 on the road against the Saints, losing their last two in St. Louis.
COMING UP NEXT
After their match with RMU-Springfield, UIS will hit the road for four straight matches and six of the final seven. The Prairie Stars will travel to Quincy for a midweek match on October 31 before taking a trip to Wisconsin-Parkside and Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday.
