SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) men's soccer team continues its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) season on Sunday.
SETTING THE SCENE
UIS (7-6-1, 7-4-1) hosts Quincy University (5-8, 4-7) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. for Senior Day at Kiwanis Stadium.
WHAT'S HAPPENING LATELY
UIS went 2-0 in GLVC play last week. The Prairie Stars fought to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (4-8-1, 4-6-1) on Friday.
Naba Alzhyri converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute and a game-winner in the 102nd minute.
Alex Zarco assisted the game-winning goal. UIS took down Lewis University (9-4, 8-3) in a 1-0 win on Sunday. Lewis entered the match in second place in the GLVC standings while riding a six-match winning streak.
Rhys Wallace delivered the free kick for the Prairie Stars and
Tommy Geile put together a clean sheet.
Quincy finished 0-2 in conference play last week. The University of Indianapolis (9-3-1, 8-2-1) secured a 2-0 victory over Quincy on Friday and UW-Parkside powered past Quincy in 4-0 decision on Sunday.
STARS OF NOTE
Alzhyri leads the Prairie Stars with 10 points, five goals and four game-winning goals. The senior from Nashville, TN is one of three players in the GLVC with four game-winning goals. Wallace has tallied nine points behind four goals and an assist. Zarco and
Josh Moore have dished out two assists apiece. Geile has recorded five shutouts on the season and leads the GLVC with an .836 save percentage.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT
The Prairie Stars rolled to a 3-0 victory over Quincy last season. Aubrey Reis leads the Hawks with seven points behind three goals and an assist.
KEY DECISIONS
The Prairie Stars pulled out a 2-0 win over Maryville University on Sept. 22. Maryville was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II poll at the time. UIS fought to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) on Sept. 24.
Quincy dropped a 2-1 loss to Maryville on Sept. 24. The Hawks outlasted UMSL in a 1-0 double-overtime victory after scoring off a penalty kick with 17 seconds remaining in the match.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Prairie Stars close out the season by facing off with No. 2 Rockhurst University (11-0-2, 10-0-1) next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in a GLVC matchup at Kiwanis Stadium.
UIS DIVISION II RECORD BOOK WATCH
Geile holds the school records for career shutouts (10) and single-season shutouts (5). Alzhyri broke the school record for most game-winning goals (4) in a season. Among career leaders, Alzhyri is tied for first in game-winning goals (4), tied for second in assists (6) and tied for fifth in points (18).
Mario Falsone is tied for fifth in career points (18) and career goals (8).
Jack Coombes is also tied for fourth in career game-winning goals.
