UIS Engages UW-Parkside/Lewis

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) men's soccer team engages the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis University in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matches this weekend.
 
SETTING THE SCENE
UIS (5-6-1, 5-4-1) takes on UW-Parkside (3-7-1, 3-5-1) on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Somers, WI. The Prairie Stars go head-to-head with Lewis (9-3, 8-2) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium.
 
WHAT'S HAPPENING LATELY
UIS went 0-2 in GLVC play last week. Bellarmine University overwhelmed the Prairie Stars in a 3-0 victory on Friday. The University of Indianapolis claimed a 2-1 win over the University of Indianapolis on Sunday. Rhys Wallace converted a free-kick goal for the Prairie Stars.
 
Lewis battled to a 3-2 victory over Indianapolis last Friday. The Flyers then earned a 1-0 double-overtime win over UW-Parkside.
 
STARS OF NOTE
Wallace, Mario Falsone and Naba Alzhyri lead the Prairie Stars with three goals apiece. Alzhyri has also contributed three game-winning goals. Josh Moore has dished out two assists. Tommy Geile ranks fourth in the GLVC with an .818 save percentage.
 
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
UW-Parkside fought to a 1-0 victory over UIS last year. Brandon Henderson has tallied three assists for the Rangers, which ties for ninth among GLVC leaders.
 
Lewis earned a 2-1 victory over the Prairie Stars last season. Nico Mueller leads the Flyers with 14 points behind six goals and two assists. Among GLVC leaders, Mueller is tied for first in game-winning goals (3), tied for third in goals and tied for fourth in points. John Horstman has notched 10 points off three goals and four assists. Horstman is tied for fourth in the conference in assists. Timm Adler, Floris Blom, Devon Amoo-Mensah and Claude Kameni have provided two assists each. Philip Huang ranks third in the conference with an .821 save percentage.
 
Lewis currently sits in second in the conference standings while UIS holds a tie for seventh.
 
KEY OUTCOMES
Lewis fell to Maryville University in a 2-1 double-overtime loss. The Flyers have picked up a 2-1 overtime victory over Missouri S&T (6-4-1, 5-4), a 1-0 overtime victory over Bellarmine, a 3-2 victory over Indianapolis and 2-1 wins over the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) (5-5-2, 5-4-1) and the University of Southern Indiana (USI) (6-5, 4-5).
 
UIS took down Maryville in 2-0 victory. Maryville was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II poll at the time.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Prairie Stars challenge Quincy University next Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium.
 
UIS DIVISION II RECORD BOOK WATCH
Geile has set the school records for career shutouts (9) and shutouts in a season (4). Falsone is tied for fifth in career goals (8) and career points (18). Jack Coombes and Alzhyri each make up parts of a third-place tie with three career game-winning goals. Alzhyri is also tied for first in single-season game-winning goals (3) and tied for second in career assists (6).
