SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Illinois Springfield took advantage of the Saint Joseph Pumas (0-2-2, 0-1-2) from the start of the game. The Prairie Stars (5-3, 2-3) turned up the pressure and took the game to the Pumas.
Macy Martin did not waste any time, notching the first goal six minutes into the game. Martin delivered a header, providing UIS a 1-0 within the first ten minutes.
After the Martin score the game would become scoreless for the rest of the first half. Both teams played tough and physical defense to keep one another from scoring.
That did not last for long once the second half of the match begun.
Maggie Juhlin, a sophomore for the Prairie Stars, took matters into her own hands and ended the scoring drought that each team was going through. The Pumas kicked the ball out of bounds which led to a Prairie Star corner kick. Jasmine Rea set up Juhlin on the corner kick for the perfect score.
Maggie Juhlin scored the goal off a header and the assist coming from Jasmine Rea.
UIS did not let their foot off of the pedal after scoring the first goal in the second half.
Taylor Mraz assisted on a goal in the 66
th minute from
Emily Matsen. This would put the Prairie Stars up 3-1 in the second. Mraz did not stop there, in the 75
th minute should delivered another big assist that led to a
Hailey Hawkins her first goal of the season.
Towards the end of the second half, the Prairie Stars knew they had the game in the bag but the Pumas did not give up. Merissa Ross scored a goal with one minute remaining in the game, making the final score 4-1.
The Prairie Stars looks to continue their run with a 12:00 pm game against University of Indianapolis this Sunday.
