Strong Second Half Leads to 3-1 Defeat of Truman State

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars improved to 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 3-1 victory over Truman State on Sunday. This is just the second time since joining the GLVC in 2010 that the Prairie Stars have started 2-0 in the conference, the last time coming in 2013.

Kanye Sayon got things going in the seventh minute, scoring his second goal of the season off a pass from Zach Allevi. UIS pushed the ball the length of the field, after a save from keeper Tommy Geile, and gave UIS the early lead.

The Bulldogs were given a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, which they connected on the tie the game. UIS outshot the Bulldogs 6-2 in the opening half and saw that number grow to 7-2 in the final 45 minutes.

Jack Coombes netted the game-winning goal in the 77th minute, heading in a perfect ball from Edward Rose, which was put into the box from near midfield following a foul. The 6'2 Coombes outjumped everybody, heading in his second goal of the season, giving UIS the 2-1 lead.

UIS capped off the victory with a goal in the 88th minute. Mario Falsone notched his first goal of the season, capitalizing off the Truman State keeper's error.

Geile made two saves for the Prairie Stars improving to 2-2 in goal. UIS played the final 16 minutes a man up, as Truman State was issued a red card. On the game, UIS was issued two yellows, while Truman State was issued six, including a red card.

Illinois Springfield will head on the road next weekend to continue GLVC play, taking on UMSL at 7:30 pm on Friday before traveling to Maryville on Sunday with kick-off set for 2:30 pm to close the weekend.
