Prairie Stars Sweep Southern Indiana to Open Series

EVANSVILLE, IN --- The Prairie Stars used late offense in game one to secure a 9-8 victory before riding the arm of Chance Simpson to a 5-1 game two victory in a sweep of Southern Indiana. UIS has now won three in a row and five of their last six, including a win over Division I Western Illinois.

GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 9, SOUTHERN INDIANA 8
Kenny Hansen got the day started with a two-run double in the first inning to give UIS an early lead over the Screaming Eagles, who were previously undefeated against UIS. Southern Indiana tied the game in the second inning but the Prairie Stars responded with three in the third to regain the lead. Zach Patterson came up with a two-out two-run double to cap the inning.

Hansen drove in another run in the seventh before UIS tagged on three in the ninth to put a four-run cushion between them and the Screaming Eagles. A bases clearing triple in the ninth put the tying run at third with two outs but England got the next batter to fly out to center to end the game, giving UIS a 9-8 victory.

GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 5, SOUTHERN INDIANA 1
The Prairie Stars plated a run in the first and one in the second to take a 2-0 lead and that was all the help Simpson would need. The senior right hander surrendered just one earned run in a complete game effort, striking out eight in the process. Simpson is now 4-0 on the season and owns a 1.04 ERA, which actually rose after the stellar outing.

Gabriel Acevedo doubled in Trey Hannam in the first before Adam Warda drew a bases loaded walk in the second to give UIS the early lead. In the sixth, a fielders' choice plated another run and another crossed on an ensuing throwing error from USI.
Up 4-0 in the seventh, Acevedo added an insurance run with his third homerun of the week, putting UIS up 5-0.

NOTES: Acevedo collected four hits on the day, scored twice, and drove in three … Hansen drove in three runs and had three hits … Five Prairie Stars had multiple hits in game one … Five players now have double digit RBI's on the season, led by Jason Galeano with 16 … Jose Marin (1-2) picked up the win in game one … Richard England (3) got the three inning save … The two wins marked the first time that UIS had ever beaten Southern Indiana, previously 0-15.
