EVANSVILLE, IN --- Illinois Springfield fell twice to Southern Indiana but earned a weekend split with the Screaming Eagles. After taking two yesterday, UIS fell 9-1 and 14-1 to close out another GLVC east series. After two series, the Prairie Stars are 4-4, having split their series' with both McKendree and Southern Indiana.
GAME ONE: SOUTHERN INDIANA 9, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 1
Max Biedrzycki got the start for the Prairie Stars, going four innings and striking out seven. Command was an issue though, as he walked five and gave up four runs (three earned) on the game.
Aaron Kuper and
Gavin Collins finished the final two innings, surrendering five runs as Southern Indiana took advantage of a UIS error.
The Prairie Stars fell behind 9-0 before breaking through in the seventh for their lone run of the game.
Austin Muench singled to right scoring
Zach Patterson, who singled earlier in the inning. The Prairie Stars had seven hits on the game, but were all singles as they struggled to put anything together offensively.
GAME TWO: SOUTHERN INDIANA 14, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 1
A five-run second inning set the tone in the second game as Southern Indiana plated a total of eight runs in a three inning span. A six run seventh pushed the game out of reach, as they again capitalized on three UIS errors.
As in the first game, UIS didn't get on the board until late, this time on a
Trey Hannam RBI single in the eighth.
Adam Warda came into score after a leadoff double in the inning. UIS recorded only six hits on the game, though two went for extra bases --- the aforementioned double from Warda and a double from
Tyler Franko.
Matt Farrington (1-5) got tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) in two innings. Six Prairie
Stars combined to throw the final six innings, four of them doing so without surrendering a run.
Kyle Strepek threw one inning, retiring the side in order and striking out two.
Austin Lukaschewski threw the final frame for UIS, finishing the Screaming Eagles off in order as well.
NOTES: Kenny Hansen collected three hits on the day, improving his average to .391 … Five of the top six
hitters in the UIS lineup are hitting over .310 … UIS has five series remaining with GLVC east opponents, they need to finish fourth or higher in the eight team league to make the conference tournament.
